Sleep
a sudden drop is often the first warning sign of a mood high
Signs of bipolar disorder people often miss
• Periods of unusually high energy, or needing much less sleep without feeling tired
• Racing thoughts, talking fast or starting many projects at once
• Spending, driving or other risks that feel out of character
• Periods of depression that come and go
• Antidepressants that left you feeling agitated, wired or worse
Did you know? Bipolar disorder isn't always big, dramatic highs. In bipolar II, the highs are milder "hypomanic" stretches that can feel like a productive streak, so people often seek help only during the lows. That's one reason bipolar disorder is often first diagnosed as depression.

What our bipolar evaluation includes
Your first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation of about 90 minutes, in person in Longwood or Clermont or by secure video. We review your mood history over time, sleep, energy, past medications, family history and substance use, and screen for related conditions such as anxiety and ADHD. With your permission, a family member's view can help. You leave with a clear explanation and a treatment plan.
Did you know? Bipolar disorder runs strongly in families and is one of the most heritable conditions in psychiatry. A simple daily log of sleep and mood is one of the best tools for spotting early warning signs, because a drop in sleep often comes before a high.
Bipolar treatment options
Treatment is individualized and may include mood stabilizers or other medications, regular follow-up visits (usually 20 to 30 minutes), lab monitoring when needed, and referrals for therapy. Steady routines for sleep, meals and activity also help keep mood stable.
Did you know? An antidepressant taken on its own can sometimes may trigger a manic or hypomanic episode in people with bipolar disorder, which is why we screen carefully before treating depression.
