a week for 3 months is how clinicians define chronic insomnia
Signs a sleep problem needs attention
• Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep most nights
• Waking too early and not being able to fall back asleep
• Feeling tired, irritable or foggy during the day
• Racing thoughts or worry at bedtime
• Relying on alcohol, cannabis or over-the-counter aids to fall asleep
Did you know? Sleep and mental health work both ways. Poor sleep can be an early sign of depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder, and treating insomnia can improve mood.
Loud snoring, gasping or pauses in breathing at night can be signs of sleep apnea, which needs a different kind of care. Tell us if a partner has noticed any of these symptoms.
What our sleep evaluation includes
Your first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation of about 90 minutes, in person in Longwood or Clermont or by secure video. We review your sleep patterns and routines, medications, caffeine and alcohol, and screen for conditions that disrupt sleep, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD and bipolar disorder. If sleep apnea is suspected, we refer you for a sleep study.
Did you know? Spending extra time in bed trying to sleep can make insomnia worse. One of the most effective CBT-I techniques limits time in bed at first to rebuild a strong sleep drive. Caffeine lingers: about half of an afternoon coffee can still be in your system at bedtime.
Sleep treatment options
Treatment is individualized and may include changes to sleep habits, treating an underlying condition such as anxiety, ADHD or depression, medication when appropriate, and referrals for cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
Did you know? Guidelines recommend CBT-I as the first treatment for chronic insomnia, ahead of sleeping pills, because its benefits tend to last after treatment ends.
